Our Bratislava Hotel

Travel from Vienna to Bratislava for the night

We were in Vienna, Austria. Since Vienna is near the border with Slovakia, we decided to sleep in Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital city.

Where is Bratislava?

Bratislava is in Slovakia, close to the border to both Austria and Hungary. That makes it only 50 miles away from downtown Vienna. You can travel from Vienna to Bratislava in a very short time. We thought it was a good chance to visit a new town, to see a piece of Slovakia, and to save on the hotel. In fact, prices in Slovakia are lower than in Austria. Therefore, we booked a hotel in Bratislava and left Vienna.

Bratislava has a long history made of different peoples, cultures, and is a meeting point between Western and Eastern Europe. In fact, it is only a couple of miles away from the former Iron Curtain. But this is another story altogether.

Our Hotel in Bratislava was Apollo Hotel. We got a very good deal: we paid only 51 euros (plus VAT) for a 4-stars hotel. The website that got us such a good deal is booking.com.

First sight of the hotel is not particularly pretty. The neighborhood itself is not very nice. However, it is only 5 to 10 minutes by car from the gorgeous Bratislava downtown. Hotel occupies a large building which facade is rather austere, probably backdating from the communist era. The hall is completely different. It is elegant and finely furnished. Hotel’s staff were very kind to us and fluent in English.

And the room, while not big, was very nice. The bathroom was medium-size and endowed with bathtub.

The warm colors of the room, the big bed, and the pleasant temperature helped us to relax and enjoy some rest after a long day. It was exactly what we needed, in the middle of such a long journey from Western Europe to Eastern Europe.

I stayed on the bed watching some TV (London Olympic Games), while my wife was reading the Bible on the armchair. The kettle made us some coffee. Afternoon sun warmed the room from behind the drapes.

Unfortunately we didn’t have time to enjoy the other facilities offered by Apollo hotel, like sauna and fitness center.

The day after, breakfast was served in a, large, marvelous dining room. The all-you-can-eat buffet was included in room price. A good way to start a new summer day, ready to go east again.

This story has two points. First, when you are close to the border of a cheaper country, take advantage of that for your accommodation. Secondly, scroll hotel lists on top-deal websites. You could easily find last-minute cheap offers for best hotels, as it happened to us.
